The Pocket Gallery, a locally owned business in Oakwood, approached Placemaking Raleigh with the idea of a pop-up market in the seldom used parking lot across the street from them.
Nestled in a quiet residential neighborhood, “The Pocket” saw the market as a way to increase visibility and foot traffic to their shop. Artist and Owner Caitlin Cary brought all the artists and we brought out all the tools and toys from the Placemaking Shed and a bustling market was born.
As so often happens, a pop-up leads to a tradition and we are already planning another Pocket pop-up in this parking lot. With an intimate feel under the trees, it is the perfect place for a market, nicely connected by foot to the surrounding walkable neighborhoods and woven into the streetscape.
Placemaking Raleigh is excited help local businesses create places wherever they are, reaching out to the communities they are a part of and activating adjacent streets, sidewalks, parking lots and more. Check out this video “INSIDE OUT” for ideas about how businesses can spill outside, simultaneously radiating energy out and inviting people in.
